Two months later, a pair of large, heavy boxes arrived at my front door from the auction house in the UK, weighing forty kilograms in total. One of the boxes had a label taped on top that simply read: “HEAVY!” Inside was more Redonda material than I’d even dared hope.

There were press clippings. There were photographs. There were royalty statements and business cards and typescripts. There was the original document formalizing the transfer of Shiel and Gawsworth’s literary executorship from Wynne-Tyson to Marías, signed at the bottom by both men. There was a document suggesting that Shiel had once been the secretary of Florence Nightingale. There were letters and postcards. There was a photocopy of Gawsworth’s 1928 report card from Merchant Taylors’ School, in which he placed fifth out of twenty-seven students in English literature, but twenty-third overall, owing in part, his teachers wrote, to a lack of focus. (The reverse of the report card was covered in Gawsworth’s doodles of soldiers, judges, and a talking tree.) The range of information was so wide as to be completely overwhelming. It took me weeks to go through all of the material, and to this day every time I open it back up I find something fascinating that I seem to have missed every other time around.
